From humble beginnings to a beacon of hope—discover how Hinemoana Charitable Trust came to be and the milestones that shaped our mission.
Every great journey begins with a single step. For Hinemoana Charitable Trust, that step was taken by a small group of individuals who saw a need and chose to act. Here is our story.
It all began with a conversation among friends in West Auckland. They noticed that many immigrant women in their community were struggling—isolated by language barriers, unfamiliar with local systems, and disconnected from support networks.
A small group of passionate individuals decided to take action. They began hosting informal gatherings in their homes, providing a safe space for women to share their experiences, learn from each other, and build friendships.
Recognizing the growing need and impact of their work, the founding members officially registered Hinemoana Charitable Trust with the New Zealand Charities Services. The name "Hinemoana" was chosen to honor the Māori guardian of the ocean—symbolizing connection, depth, and the life-giving force of community.
With registration number CC63881, the Trust became a recognized entity, enabling them to expand their reach and formalize their programs.
Despite the challenges of a global pandemic, Hinemoana found new ways to serve. The Trust expanded its mission to include support for the elderly and homeless populations in Auckland. Virtual programs were launched to maintain connections during lockdowns.
This period reinforced the importance of adaptability and community resilience. Many volunteers stepped forward, demonstrating the spirit of aroha (love) that defines our organization.
As the world reopened, Hinemoana emerged stronger than ever. The Trust organized numerous community events, cultural celebrations, and educational workshops. Partnerships were formed with local organizations and businesses.
The women's empowerment program flourished, with participants gaining confidence, skills, and employment opportunities. The elderly care initiative brought joy and companionship to dozens of seniors.
Today, Hinemoana Charitable Trust stands as a pillar of the Auckland community. We have touched hundreds of lives, empowered countless women, and provided essential support to the elderly and homeless.
Our journey continues as we work toward our vision of a united, thriving Auckland where everyone has the support they need to flourish. With each passing year, we grow stronger, more connected, and more committed to our mission.
See Our Vision"We started with a simple belief: that everyone deserves a community where they feel seen, supported, and valued. That belief continues to guide us every day."
